August 1, 1914

One hundred years ago today the German Empire declared war on the Russian Empire.  France and Belgium began to mobilize their armies.

The war would be a disaster for both the German Empire and the Russian Empire. By the end of the war millions of lives would be lost, both empires would collapse, their monarchies would be abolished and each would be mired in their own civil wars which would set the stage for the rise of Communism in Russia and Nazism in Germany.
